Vision of art
1. Choose a work that represents you, describe it in relation to its format and materiality, its relation with time and space, its style and theme; detail its production process.
Ghost train is a work constructed out of the photographs that the photo labs trash. Before throwing them, the pictures are pass through a shredder machine. I stick together these fragments of pictures with pins No. 50 because it is a quick way to paste them. These small fragments are converted into strips of photos and these turn into plots that become useful objects to build spaces.
Carinito Woodcutting: Carinito cuts firewood at home. I photograph her. Then I fold those photos to highlight the action and by a quick look, create the fiction of a video.
I am interested in exploring the boundaries of photography. For this I find that volume and movement are two elements that help to build three-dimensional spaces.
2. In general terms, how would you suggest to approach your work?
However you feel like.
3. In reference to your work and your position in the national and international art fields, what tradition do you recognize yourself in? Who are your contemporary referents? What artists of previous generations are of interest to you?
In the international field I am interested towards the works of Francis Alÿs, Frank Stella, Bridget Riley. Nationally I am feel interested towards Pablo Siquier´s works, Ernesto Ballesteros, Marcelo Pombo, Gachi Hasper, Román Vitali, Leo Battistelli, Daniel Garcia. From previous generations Antonio Berni, Lucio Fontana, Julio Le Parc, Augusto Schivoni, Ferando Fader.
4. Choose works or exhibitions from the last ten or fifteen years which in your opinion were very significant and explain why
There was a showing in 1992 at Benzacar Gallery where some of the artists mentioned above were exhibiting, there Marcelo Pombo showed a Sabanitas where he blindfolded the eyes of the angels /children. That and the showings at the Rojas centre struck me while seeing them.
5. What tendencies or groupings from common elements do you see in argentine art of the last ten or fifteen years?
While apparently there are many different trends, I see two different trends. Those that relate more to a form of production related to group practices and none object base procedures, manifested through documentation of actions, fascines, publications, magazines, blogs and websites. The other tendency would be the individual artists who produce work. The first tendency goes towards the dematerialization of the work as an object while the second towards the production of works. Like two blind eyes on the same image, a monochrome of possibilities.
To re-think these two trends would be a very important task to do. And perhaps a way to do so is to create spaces for discussion as something that is necessary, they allow us to put aside –at least for a moment- our own autonomy of each particular production process (whether of a single artist or a groups of artists). To open our eyes to other ideas and routes and thus, afford ourselves to be contaminated by others, that might be, a way of scare our own individualism.
